PRUNEDALE, Monterey County — October 27, 2026. The dangerous-feeling three-way junction at San Miguel Canyon Road and Castroville Boulevard is slated for a substantial change. Monterey County’s Board of Supervisors placed final construction plans and bidding authorization for Project 1176 on its September 29 agenda, describing a new single-lane roundabout to replace the existing T-intersection.
What motorists and pedestrians can expect
Plans call for a central roundabout, raised medians, splitter islands, realignment and widening, marked pedestrian crossings, accessible curb ramps, refuge islands and bicycle facilities. The stated purpose is to improve traffic circulation and reduce potential collision points. It does not mean the intersection is already rebuilt or that temporary lane closures have begun.
Where the money comes from
The September board report identifies approximately $6.24 million in combined Highway Safety Improvement Program, transportation-impact-fee and regional transportation funding, with about $3 million in county Measure X transportation revenue to cover the remaining projected construction cost. These are a proposed financing breakdown and budgeted resources, not an independent audit of money spent.
The county previously approved a mitigated environmental declaration for the project in June 2025. Residents can follow advertised bids, signed construction contracts, start notices and traffic detour announcements through County Public Works.
